Overview:

This course is designed for those who have a passion for supporting older people, ensuring they have fulfilling and rewarding lives. The CHC33015 Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing) provides the skills and knowledge to be able to effectively support older people in a wide range of personal care, community and social based activities for those still living in the community or in residential aged care.

During the course you will develop the skills to work one on one with older people, maximising their independence and well being, and on completion will be able to work implementing individualised support plans and manage the needs of those you are working with across all aspects of daily living. Work involves using discretion and judgement in relation to individual support as well as taking responsibility for your own outputs.

 

About the Sector:

Aged care work is focused on providing personalised support to older individuals either in their own home or within an aged care facility. The work involves assisting individuals performing day to day functions ensuring they are living fulfilling lives and are active within their community. Key support tasks include:

  • Implementing individualised support plans and monitoring progress
  • Arranging and participating in social and community related activities
  • Assisting with personal hygiene and dressing
  • Assisting with daily household tasks
  • Assisting with mobility
  • Providing companionship and emotional support
  • Ensuring daily pastoral and medical care is administered with the bounds of the support worker role

This work is often undertaken by aged care residential facilities, government and community services agencies and workers will be:

  • Responsible for implementing policies and guidelines of the employing organisation
  • Largely self-directed with fairly autonomous decision-making capacity under the indirect supervision of a manager

There are no pre requisites for any of the core or elective courses

 

Delivery Mode:

  • The CHC33015 Certificate III Individual Support - Ageing can be studied face to face, online or blended. The delivery mode is dependent on the learners preferred learning needs, personal commitments and geographic location
  • A minimum of 120 hours mandatory work placement is required
  • The work placement is specifically required to demonstrate competence in the unit

“CHCCCS023 Support independence and wellbeing” Please work with your trainer to confirm the work experience you will be doing can be used to demonstrate the required competencies

 

Recommended Online Study Hours Per Week:

25 hours per week, excluding placement time. This may vary for learners who are able to claim Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).

 

Learning Materials May Include:

  • Paper based and/or digital content with assessments accessed online
  • Access to Skills Generation Learning Management System (LMS) including Library resources
  • Skype/other for training sessions, group discussions and virtual classrooms
  • Inclusive Learning Strategies are also available for learners with disabilities enabling them to participate on the same basis as other learners

Skills Generation provides a facilitative and collaborative environment to support the underpinnings of effective community services practice.

 

Assessments may include:

  • Professional discussions/mentoring with your trainer
  • Individual tasks, assignments and case studies
  • Group work/assignments for face to face delivery
  • Work based reflective tasks
  • Third party reporting from your workplace supervisor
  • Demonstration of practical skills through digital recording as applicable

 

Certification / Recognition:

On successful completion of all units of competency and having completed the mandatory work placement, you will receive the nationally recognised qualification:

CHC33015 Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing)

The qualification is awarded by Skills Generation RTO41008, with training and assessment having been delivered by Skills Generation or a Third Party approved training provider.

 

Learner Requirements:

  • Access to a computer with word processing, email, Skype/other, PDF reader capabilities and a reliable internet connection
  • Language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) levels that indicate you have a high probability of being able to successfully complete the course. Skills Generation can help you assess your current LLN levels as required to ensure we are able to effectively support you
  • If working with aged people you will need a Blue Card. Please contact Student Services at admin@skillsgen.com.au who can assist with this
  • Ability to allocate appropriate study hours per week
  • Most employers/work placement hosts will also expect you to hold a current First Aid Certificate, have a police check and also an up to date flu vaccination. Please attend to these urgently as you will most likely not be able to do your mandatory placement without them.

 

Work Placement:

The Federal Government announced on 28 June 2021 that the Covid vaccination will become mandatory for all Aged Care workers, with a target date of mid September 2021 for all workers in the sector to receive their first shot. We expect a policy document to be released on this shortly which will likely also impact individuals completing work placement.  If you have any questions please contact your trainer or Student Services at admin@skillsgen.com.au who can assist with this. 

To achieve this qualification you must have completed 120 hours of vocational work placement in a relevant community services or aged care setting. This is required to meet the specific requirements of unit “CHCCCS023 Support independence and wellbeing”

You will need to find your own work placement with an organisation approved by Skills Generation and it is important you commence this process at the beginning of the course. Skills Generation staff and your trainer will be available to assist you in identifying relevant organisations.

You will be covered by Skills Generation insurance when undertaking work placement as an enrolled learner and as part of the course requirements. You will be responsible for the cost of any travel and accommodation if the work placement is outside your region.

Although not guaranteed, often once learners have successfully completed their work placement they are offered permanent employment by the organisation.

 

Online Study:

Skills Generation’s Learning Management System (LMS) offer you a one-stop-shop for accessing your learning content and assessment, as well as allowing you to communicate with your trainer/ assessor and other learners if you wish. You can upload your assessments with no size or format limits as well as accessing your trainers/assessor’s feedback and monitoring your results.

You’ll have access 24/7 for ultimate study flexibility at times that suit you. The Skills Generation LMS Resources Library provides you with additional resources that may enhance your learning experience.

 

About Recognition of Prior Learning:

If you are currently working, or have previously worked in a relevant industry, you may be eligible for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).  RPL applies where you have work place experience/ competency that can be formally assessed against the units of competency in this course. There is an RPL Kit developed for this qualification and if you wish to undertake an RPL process, please advise Student Services or your trainer/assessor.

 

You’ll Need a USI:

This course is delivered both Face to Face Classes (in some locations) and online, with 120 hours of work placement. We can discuss helping you set up a relationship with a suitable Aged Care organisation for your work placement training.  

This course is designed for self-paced online learning with professional support. This means you’ll be able to progress through the course at your own pace, using interactive lessons designed specifically for online learning.

Timeline: 12 months to complete this course online however you may progress at a faster pace if you have the extra time to commit to your studies.
